Laboratory Update Helps Circul-Aire Pursue Air Filtering Expansion Into New Industries.
Banner year in filter media sales prompts $250,000 update to increase testing capacity and maintain quality control standards.
MONTREAL- Circul-Aire, the gas phase air filtration media and equipment manufacturing division of Dectron Internationale, Montreal, has completed a $250,000 update on its Quality Control, Testing, and R&D Laboratory.
Prompted by last year's record sales in replacement filtering media, the lab expansion doubles the testing capacity for the 40-year-old firm. The facility expansion is crucial to Circul-Aire's continued pursuit of new industries such as airport terminals, office buildings, government buildings, morgues, clean rooms, and other facilities worldwide with a growing need for gas phase air filtration equipment and media.
The increasing amount of quality control sample checking-both from newly manufactured media and on-site samples submitted by customers participating in Circul-Aire's own proprietary Tech-Chek program- necessitated four new fume hoods and wider ranges of supplementary equipment such as gas analyzers, flow meters, and other test equipment.
Research and development capacities will increase also as Circul-Aire aims to improve removal efficiencies and increase the existing multitude of chemical filter media pellet combinations the firm offers, according to Director of Laboratory Services, Christopher Flaherty. "In the early days, the bulk of our business was corrosion control and indoor air quality (IAQ) for pulp mills and refineries," said Flaherty, "however now we're providing air filtering solutions for sewage treatment plants, airports, foreign embassies and other facilities that have a variety gas removal requirements."
Flaherty also said the gas phase filtration business has also expanded from the fact that people refuse to breathe the gases they might have tolerated 20 years ago as IAQ awareness grows.
The lab expansion will also equip Circul-Aire to simulate more building conditions when custom designing a gas phase filtration media mix for a client. To simulate air that's laden with air contaminants commonly found at airports, for example, the new lab will have the ability to generate NOx, SOx, and volatile organic compounds (VOC) for pre-shipping tests to assure the highest possible filtering efficiency.
"The fact that we have been operating a specialized laboratory within Circul-Aire has benefited us in creating a database of applications worldwide," said Brian Monk, vice-president sales/marketing. "The lab has been monitoring these applications for the last 40 years, which gives us an advantage in terms of being able to provide systems expertise to new clients with similar air quality problems."
